FAQ

Common home energy questions

When is the cheapest time to charge your EV?

It depends on your utility's time-of-use (TOU) rate plan. Most utilities offer off-peak or super off-peak windows — often late evening through early morning — when electricity costs a fraction of peak rates. Gleam reads your actual rate schedule and tells you the cheapest windows to charge your EV at home.

Is your current utility rate plan costing you more than it should?

Many homeowners stay on a default flat-rate plan even when a TOU or EV-specific plan would save money. Gleam compares your real usage against available rate plans for your utility and flags when switching could lower your bill.

When is your solar production actually highest?

Solar output peaks around midday, but that doesn't always align with when you use the most electricity. Gleam tracks production forecasts and your consumption patterns so you can use or store solar when it matters most.

Are you exporting valuable energy back to the grid for almost nothing?

Under net metering, the credit you receive for exported solar varies by utility and time of day. Gleam helps you understand when self-consumption beats export and when off-peak grid charging is cheaper than using stored solar.

Is your battery charging and discharging at the right times?

A home battery saves the most when it charges during cheap off-peak hours and discharges during expensive peak periods. Gleam models your rate plan and usage to recommend charge and discharge windows that maximize savings.
